Nick knew he had to be dreaming. Never had his senses ever been so alive as they were when he dreamed. It was night, but he could see as if it were day. Better, in fact. Everything was crystal clear, so clear he wondered at times if these were dreams at all. His hearing was almost too sharp. He instinctively blocked the worst of the noise around him, but when he focused he could hear voices and even heartbeats in nearby buildings. And his sense of smell...
He could smell blood. It made his stomach growl, and Nick had to fight the urge to...The urge to what? He didn't know, but he instinctively knew that to do so on the busy sidewalk he was walking would be bad. Blood. There was something about blood. Something other than the emptiness in his stomach...
He looked around, trying to listen past all the background noise. There! An apartment building nearby, he could hear screaming from inside. How, he didn't know, but he didn't wait. He stepped back into an alley, and then he was in the air. Flying. To his sleeping mind this was perfectly logical, and Nick didn't question it. He simply followed the voice, through a window. And as glass shattered around him and he got to his feet, he saw a confused-looking man in a ski mask standing over a pleading woman. Nick bared his teeth at the man, and a low, animal growl came unbidden.
The criminal took one look at him and backed up. "What the hell are you, man?" He kept backing up, leaving the woman on the floor to scramble out of the way.
She smelled good to Nick. She was bleeding from a cut across her chest, where the intruder used his knife to cut away her shirt. The smell of the blood was overwhelming, and it was only the criminal moving that got his attention again. He moved closer, backing the man against a wall, and growled.
"Don't kill me, man. Please, I'm not gonna do it anymore, I swear..."
Nick was so close, he could hear the crook's heartbeat, and that was a lot more important than words. His voice was a distracted monotone as he listened, mouth watering. "No, you're not." It was almost too easy to push him against a wall an hold him there as he screamed and struggled, then he inclined his head, leaned in close, and bit.
Blood, sweet, warm blood filled his mouth. And then he woke up. Nick ran a hand over his forehead, wiping away the sweat there. He wasn't breathing hard, but he still felt that same, stomache-fluttering panic, and he took several deep breaths to calm down. He could swear he could still smell the blood. He shook his head. That was impossible, it had only been a dream. It was lighter in his room than normal, though, and he could see his hand stained with something. He frowned and reached for the light.
The back of his hand was stained with a bit of blood, but what caught his eye were his clothes and his sheets...
Nick jumped from the bed, ripping off the blood-soaked clothes and tossing them on the bed as he ran for the bathroom. He didn't feel sick, just sort of full and satisfied for the first time in a long while, but he reached for the knob for the shower.
Nick didn't hear the phone ring downstairs, or the message that was left on his machine. "Hey, Nick, we got a weird one come in. Male and female in a high rise downtown. Bodies completely drained of blood, can you believe that? They're tentatively calling it a home invasion gone wrong. Gimme a call. Chiao."
